The Inclusive Norwich charity re-launched its Access Group on the 9th of October. The re-launch is more than just a fresh start; it represents a renewed commitment to making Norwich an accessible city where everyone can participate fully, regardless of any barriers.

Why The Access Group Matters
Accessibility remains a significant barrier for many people in Norwich. Whether it is navigating public spaces, accessing services, or participating in social activities, obstacles can limit independence and inclusion. The Inclusive Norwich access group allows residents living with disabilities and access requirements to share their lived experiences and to
identify these barriers.
The re-launch of the access group allows for:
Raising awareness about accessibility issues in Norwich
Gathering feedback directly from people with disabilities
Advising local organisations on how to improve their facilities and services
Promoting inclusive events that welcome all community members
Working with local authorities, businesses, and community members to make Norwich the most accessible city.
This approach ensures that changes are practical and based on real experiences, not assumptions.
The Lived Experiences of Norwich's Disabled Residents
At the re-launch event, attendees shared several personal experiences and grievances. This ranged from bus travel, pavement access, the lack of disability-friendly employers, inaccessible venues such as art venues and restaurants.
A key challenge that arose was the incorporation of the lived experience to develop access work; it is difficult to effectively advertise an access group without making the necessary accessibility requirements. And nevertheless, this may still not be accessible enough for residents struggling to leave their homes. This is an ongoing challenge which the Partnership reckons with, and thus we offer the option of virtual attendance as well.
Additionally, as in all of life, community engagement events can often mean that certain voices are louder than others. Thus, facilitation is a key aspect of hosting a successful access group. This is in consideration that low/fluctuating energy levels among disabled people are common.
How You Can Get Involved
The success of the Inclusive Norwich Access group depends on community participation. Anyone interested in supporting accessibility in Norwich can join or contribute in various ways:
Attend access group meetings to share your experiences or ideas
Volunteer to help organise events or outreach activities
Advocate for accessibility improvements in your neighbourhood

Looking Ahead: The Future of Accessibility in Norwich
The re-launch of The Inclusive Norwich charity’s access group marks a positive step toward a more accessible Norwich. As the group grows and gains more support, it can influence larger projects such as urban planning, public transport upgrades, and local consultations.
The key to lasting change lies in ongoing collaboration between disabled people, local authorities, businesses, and the wider community. By working together, Norwich can become a place where accessibility is not an afterthought but a standard.
